I recently read an article written by Jim Mathis and produced by the Christian Businessmen’s Committee. In his introduction, he stated:

When I was about 12 years old, my father took me to a hardware store to buy my first set of real tools. Among the first items I acquired were needle-nose pliers. They came with a lecture from my dad that he had already given me many times about the importance of having good tools, knowing how to use them, and taking care of them. He always concluded with the admonition, “Take care of your tools and they will take care of you.”

Yes, it is important that we choose the right tools, and take care of them, if we want the right results.

Jim’s dad had been a mechanic. He used wrenches, pliers and socket sets. Jim himself chose photography. He used digital cameras and various sizes of lenses and speeds of film. Do you think they ever had reason to use each others’ tools? Probably not.

What is your “trade” of choice? Is it executive leadership? Is it fundraising? Is it coaching or mentoring? Is it public speaking? Is it crunching the numbers so that your organization stays financially sound? Is it human relations? What are the tools of the trade you need to be successful? What skills are necessary? What training is compulsory? Are you cultivating those skills through education, reading and real life experiences? Are you maximizing your opportunities?

 The Role of the Bible

Whatever your career, one tool you can and should maximize is the Bible. What more valuable tool is there than God’s Word applied to that new training manual, sales presentation, budget, power point presentation or website? The Bible provides limitless guidance on a range of topics you will encounter every day, from communications and ethics, to personnel and other decisions you are called upon to make. It is the single multi-purpose resource we cannot live without.

Joshua 1:8 says, “Do not let this book of the law (scriptures) depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. THEN, you will be prosperous and successful.”

God’s inspired Word applies to all of life. It is the one tool we cannot forget to take along to work each day.
